James Purdey & Sons Ltd. was established in London in 1814, the year before the battle of Waterloo. The founder, James Purdey, had previously been apprenticed to Joseph Manton, the foremost gunmaker of his time. Purdey set up his gun making business in Oxford Street and by 1828 it had become the most famous gunshop in London.
10 years later Queen Victoria is recorded as having bought her first pair of Purdey best guns and various accessories. The company was granted its first Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria, an honour that has been bestowed on the Managing Director of Purdey's by each succeeding Monarch.
