Isom decided to use the slack period to work towards ISO 9000 (then it was BS 5750). The company's experiences of using consultants was not good - they found consultants listened to what Isom's staff had to say and then the consultants wrote that down in the form of a very expensive report.
The company therefore decided to do it themselves. As professional communicators they had little difficulty in understanding the jargon of the standard. They used a lecturer in Quality Systems at the local college to verify what had been done and within five months of starting, Isom had achieved registration.
In taking that course of action, the outlay in gaining registration was considerably reduced. Subsequently, Isom's quality management system has been successfully updated in-house to meet the requirements of ISO9000:1994 and, more recently, ISO9001:2000.
